My dad used to make homemade root beer using Hires Extract and yeast. It was discontinued (I think in the 1990's)and there is another company that says they are Hires (Big H) but it isn't as good. This was real close to what my dad used to make and I will be ordering again... Make sure you read the directions for Root Beer #2 because it only makes half the amount of soda as the other root beer recipes. If you are like me, trying to recreate that homemade root beer from childhood, look no further, this is it!

So, long story short... I bought a SodaStream and was very unsatisfied with the available flavors. After experimenting with natural fruit concoctions, I decided it was time to try a root beer. I am a root beer lover, but have never had any micro brews or anything... Just typical off the shelf stuff (A&W, Barq's, IBC, Hires, etc.) I honestly wasn't expecting much when I ordered this. Boy was I wrong.
I have made about 5 liters now, 1 liter at a time and force carbonated using the SodaStream. After some experimentation, I have hit the perfect combination of sugar, flavoring, and carbonation. The root beer has a very rich flavor and blows away any store-bought root beers I have tried.
I also picked up some of the cream soda flavoring, but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I will definitely be checking out some of the other flavors in the future.
